You can have the fastest SOS on the market. It's worthless if you can't reach it. Here's why the button is the wrong thing to build safety around — and what to build instead.

The promise every safety product makes

Walk the aisle of personal-safety products — apps, pendants, wearables, lone-worker devices — and almost all of them sell you the same thing: a button. Press it, and help arrives. It's simple, reassuring, and easy to demo. It's also where the thinking usually stops.

The trouble is that a button is a promise you have to keep yourself, at the exact moment you're least able to.

The problem with buttons

Picture the situations where you'd genuinely need it. You slip on a wet stairwell and hit your head. You collapse on an empty trail before dawn. You're a lone worker who's gone quiet halfway through a night shift. In each one, the single action a panic button depends on — a deliberate press — is the thing you can't do.

A button only works if three things are true at once: you're conscious, you're physically able, and you have signal. Real emergencies rarely grant all three. The worse the emergency, the less likely you are to be able to raise it.

What “automatic” actually means
